Proper pet care is important at all stages of a pet's life. Senior petcare is just as important as the care we give to our pets when they are puppies and kittens.

Our pets are like part of the family. We let them sleep in our beds, we buy them their favorite treats and our photo frames are filled with pictures of them doing cute thins. They are always there to cheer us up when we feel sad and to keep us company when we are lonely.

We want them to live as long as possible. That is why making sure they have the right care in every stage of life is so important. Senior pets' needs are different than those of younger cats and dogs. Their nutritional requirements are different and even the best 'adult' food may not meet those requirements. So, select a food designed especially for seniors.

When are pets considered seniors? In general, cats are seniors between age 8 and 9. For dogs, ages vary by breed. A small dog, which tends to live longer, may not be considered a senior until age 10-13. Larger dogs, however, have a shorter life expectancy and are therefore seniors at an earlier age. A Great Dane, for example has a life expectancy of 6-8 years. He will be called a senior before age 5.

Older pets need health exams twice a year. Problems caught early have a better chance of being successfully treated.

It is important to keep your pet well exercised. Obesity can occur with a cooped-up pet. Their bodies also tend to deteriorate more quickly if not used enough. So keep them active! Now, on the other hand if your pet has certain health concerns that prevent much activity, be sure not to overwork him, but try to get him as much exercise and fresh air as he can handle.

Proper senior petcare is vital to keeping your older pet happy and healthy and helping them live as long as possible. And after all, that is what we want, right?
